The American tech giant Meta recently announced that it will invest approximately 10 billion US dollars in Sturgeon County, Alberta, Canada, to build its largest data center outside the United States.
This super-large facility, covering an area of approximately 270,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of 33 football fields, is not only Meta's 33rd global data center, but also becomes the company's largest overseas computing power node with a power capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW) - this amount of electricity is sufficient to meet the daily electricity needs of approximately 750,000 households. The project is located in Canada, marking that the country has officially been included in the global core infrastructure map of artificial intelligence, and also reflecting the extreme demand for energy and infrastructure in the computing power competition in the AI era.
Facing the huge energy consumption challenge of data center operation, Meta chose to proactively build an energy guarantee system. The company plans to build a 932-megawatt natural gas power plant by itself and directly connect it to the Alberta provincial power grid. At the same time, it collaboratively plans with several local energy enterprises and grid operators several years in advance, fully funding the upgrading and transformation of the supporting power grid infrastructure to ensure stable power supply before and after the launch of the data center.
In terms of resource utilization, this project commits to adopting a water-saving closed-loop liquid cooling dry cooling system. During the entire operation process, the cooling环节 does not require the consumption of water resources. Meta will also bear all water fees and sewage treatment costs resulting from facility operation, in order to minimize the impact on the local ecological environment to the greatest extent.
From an economic and social benefit perspective, this large-scale investment will bring significant dividends to the Province of Alberta. During the construction period, it is estimated that 3,000 construction jobs will be created. After completion and operation, approximately 300 technical full-time positions will be provided on a long-term basis. The Alberta provincial government has calculated that this project can contribute approximately 250 million Canadian dollars in economic output annually, including direct benefits such as taxes and royalty payments, providing continuous support to the regional finance.
Gary Demasi, Vice President of Development and Strategy at Meta Data Center, publicly stated that this layout reflects the company's confidence in the Canadian infrastructure environment and is a crucial move in its expansion of the global computing power map.
Although there are concerns in the market about whether there will be a structural shortage of AI computing power in the near future, and some local data center projects in the United States have been hindered by energy supply issues and community resistance, Meta has demonstrated its long-term determination to accelerate in the AI infrastructure sector during the economic downturn by building its own power plants, deeply integrating with local power grids, and strictly fulfilling environmental protection commitments.
This project not only provides the underlying computing power support for Meta's next-generation artificial intelligence model training and inference services, but also indicates that leading technology enterprises are shifting from solely relying on the public power grid to an autonomous and controllable energy mix, in order to address the systemic challenges brought about by the exponential growth in computing power demands.
As the construction progresses, this "power behemoth" in Sturgeon County will become a symbolic example of the convergence of global AI industry competition and energy security.
