Anshih Semiconductor bets on India: Rebalancing of the power device supply chain
Nexperia and Tata Electronics have announced a strategic partnership, covering areas such as semiconductor wafer manufacturing, packaging and testing, technical collaboration and innovation.

On September 17th, Nexperia of the Netherlands and Tata Electronics of India announced the establishment of a long-term strategic partnership. The cooperation does not merely focus on single-generation processing or packaging orders, but covers 300mm wafer manufacturing, packaging and testing, technical collaboration, and the joint construction of the semiconductor ecosystem simultaneously.

According to the arrangements disclosed by both parties, Nexperia's MOSFET product portfolio will enter the 300mm wafer factory in Dholera, Gujarat, of Tata Electronics for production; the assembly and testing of its discrete semiconductor products will be arranged to be completed in the packaging factory in Jagiroad, Assam.

Stefan Tilger, the interim CEO of Nexperia, said: "Our cooperation with Tata Electronics combines the complementary advantages of both parties in technology, manufacturing, and innovation, and also supports the broader development of semiconductor capabilities in India. This framework creates new cooperation opportunities and reaffirms our commitment to serving customers through a resilient and globally balanced manufacturing network."

This means that Nexperia is not only seeking packaging capacity in India, but also includes some of the front-end manufacturing of power devices in the scope of the cooperation. For power devices, the process coupling between wafer manufacturing and packaging testing is relatively high, and applications such as automotive and industrial have more stringent requirements for reliability. Therefore, if both parties truly want to achieve mass production, they still need to complete a lot of verification work in process adaptation, quality system, and supply chain collaboration.

Tata Electronics is one of the most highly regarded domestic semiconductor manufacturing platforms in India. The Dholera wafer fabrication plant is planned to have a monthly production capacity of approximately 50,000 wafers, with a process range from 28nm to 110nm. The Jagiraoa packaging facility is focused on advanced packaging and system-level packaging capabilities.

The product portfolio of Anstal Semiconductor consists mainly of discrete devices, logic devices, power MOSFETs, and automotive-grade semiconductors. These products have a relatively low dependence on extremely advanced manufacturing processes, but require high standards for production stability, cost control, and the automotive-grade certification system. The Dholera factory of Tata Electronics has a certain matching space in terms of process nodes with its product requirements, while the Jagiraoa packaging plant may provide local testing capabilities for subsequent automotive-grade and industrial products.

However, neither the specific production capacity scale, product introduction schedule, nor financial terms have been disclosed by the two parties. The "long-term strategic cooperation" mentioned in the press release is more of a framework statement. The actual implementation still depends on the progress of factory construction, yield improvement, and customer certification schedules.

From an Indian perspective, the value of this cooperation is not just about introducing an international customer. If Anstal Semiconductor can complete product introduction at Dholera and Jagiraoa, it will provide an important opportunity for local wafer and packaging plants in India to verify automotive-grade products.

Dr. Randhir Thakur, the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, stated: "We are very pleased to collaborate with Anstal Semiconductor and produce its products in our Dholera and Jagiraoa semiconductor facilities. This comprehensive partnership covering the semiconductor manufacturing value chain represents an important step for Tata Electronics in building a globally competitive integrated semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India. Our cooperation also aligns with the growing technological and trade relationship between India and the European Union. As we strengthen the semiconductor supply chain and promote innovation, such alliances will help unlock new opportunities for industrial cooperation, technology development, and long-term economic growth."

However, it should also be noted that India's semiconductor manufacturing is still in its early stages. Factory construction, equipment introduction, yield improvement, automotive-grade certification, and supply chain localization all require time. Especially for automotive-grade semiconductors, the customer verification cycle is long and the failure tolerance is low, and it will not be shortened quickly due to policy incentives or capital investment.

Therefore, this cooperation should be regarded as a node in the Indian semiconductor ecosystem moving from the "planning stage" to the "customer verification stage," rather than a proof that production capacity is already mature.
